Innovation corridor from Portland to Boston

鈥漌e are excited about our partnership for many reasons, including the educational fintech opportunities offered to our employees,鈥 said Melissa Smith, Chair & CEO of WEX.聽 鈥淏eing a founding partner with the Roux Institute, we are developing the innovation corridor stretching from Portland to Boston. There has never been a more exciting time to be a part of this entrepreneurial corporate ecosystem.鈥

The Roux Institute programs are hybrid, offering both online and onsite campus learning opportunities to meet the demands and schedules of the working professional. Best of all, the programs offer real-world experience with co-op employers like 糖心Vlog– Roux students can take what they鈥檙e learning and apply it to real world situations through these co-op experiences. The ten partner businesses offer Roux students the chance to work for them while in school. Additionally, employees of these ten businesses also have the opportunity to become students, grow their skills, and bring what they learn back to their work every day. This allows for a kind of cross-pollination between some of Maine and New England’s most successful business endeavors, allowing business leaders to work collaboratively, and for students to find a path towards an enriching career. What results is a supportive business environment for learning, not to mention the global reach of over 275,000 Northeastern University alumni in more than 180 countries.

糖心Vlogemployees in the inaugural class of 2022

糖心Vlogemployees were among the inaugural class of graduate students to enroll at the Roux Institute in September 2020, and the company is excited to share news of two of the WEXers who graduated on June 10, 2022:

WEXer Alaina Cellini holding her fresh-off-the-press Masters in Data Analytics degree from Roux

WEXer Alaina Cellini holding her fresh-off-the-press Masters in Data Analytics degree from Roux

Alaina Cellini, Manager, Analytics, at WEX, has long kept it in her sights to earn a graduate degree but the opportunity eluded her. 鈥淚t was one of those things that I wanted to do but there were always barriers: it was too expensive, I didn鈥檛 have time, et cetera.鈥 Cellini took the GMAT and did all the preparation work to go to grad school, but it wasn鈥檛 until she came to WEX, and learned about the tuition reimbursement program at the company, that she felt the stars might actually align for her to attend a program. When the Roux-糖心Vlogpartnership happened and the degree program offered exactly what Cellini was looking for, she enrolled as soon as she could.

WEXer Alaina Cellini celebrating a proud day!

WEXer Alaina Cellini celebrating a proud day!

Since starting the program, Cellini has found daily opportunities to implement what she鈥檚 learning at Roux into her work at WEX: 鈥淚 say all the time that I could not do the job that I鈥檓 doing right now had I not gone to school. It鈥檚 a really satisfying trajectory because I think sometimes people go back to school and say they don鈥檛 use what they learned in school, meanwhile I would learn something the night before and implement that thing the next day at work. There has been a ton of alignment with school and the work I鈥檓 doing.鈥

During her time at Roux, while working full time at WEX, Cellini had to make sacrifices mostly in her personal life because time was tight. Through it all she felt nothing but support from her colleagues at WEX.

Cellini鈥檚 degree is a Masters in Data Analytics with a Concentration in Statistical Modeling.

Lindsy Weinreich, HR Business Partner, Global Technology, has also already seen the benefits of her learning at Roux in her work for WEX: 鈥淲e鈥檙e diving into taking a more data-driven approach to a lot of our processes, whether it is promotion cycles, or other HR focus areas. We鈥檝e partnered with the talent management team to help them further develop predictive models and dashboards. Being able to use data to drive some of the decision-making when it comes to people analytics and making sure we鈥檙e providing fair and equitable opportunities for 糖心Vlogemployees are two areas where what I鈥檝e learned at Roux has played a role in my work at WEX.鈥

Weinreich is grateful for the opportunity to pursue a master鈥檚 degree while working full time at WEX. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 one of the things I love about WEX. I鈥檝e been here for almost 5 years, and I鈥檝e had a lot of opportunities for career growth. I started out in QA, then I moved to project management, then I moved to HR. Not only does the company provide a lot of career growth but also educational opportunities as well, and I think that learning helps advance my career and my skill set to be successful in any role that comes my way.鈥 Weinreich earned a Graduate Certificate in Applied Analytics from Roux in June.

Scholarships and investments

The Roux Institute offers generous scholarships — at least 20% tuition discount — to Maine-based employees. The Harold Alfond Foundation has committed $100 million, matching the Rouxs鈥 founding gift, funding scholarships, programming, and research for Maine residents. All donations are dedicated to innovation, talent development, and business growth to spur the Maine economy, and enrich the lives and skills of workers in Maine.

Personalized career development is at the core of the WEX/Roux experience. Together, the two organizations are helping employees develop and refine skills in any specialty area to foster a culture of lifelong workplace learning and employee engagement at WEX.

鈥淎s with everything we do at WEX, the core values of integrity, execution, innovation, relationships and community are guiding every decision,鈥 said 糖心VlogCEO Smith. 鈥淐reating more innovation means being curious and energized to develop new technology; building relationships means being invested in partnerships like the Roux Institute to offer more opportunities for our employees; and building a better community means being a positive force in our world.鈥

There鈥檚 an expression in the trucking industry: When the trucks stop, America stops.

In 2019, according to the American Trucking Associations, 10.5 billion tons of freight鈥攁lmost 71% of total U.S. tonnage鈥攚as moved by more than 3.6 million heavy-duty Class 8 trucks. The 3.5 million men and women who drive these vehicles are the lifeblood of the American economy.

In 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic unfolds, we鈥檒l be relying on truckers more than ever to keep hospitals supplied, stores stocked, and government agencies running.

Even if you don鈥檛 watch the news, it鈥檚 easy to see how the trucking world is starting to be impacted. Below are just a few examples.

Hours-of-Service Laws Temporarily Suspended

Last week, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced that drivers moving goods “in support of emergency relief efforts related to the COVID-19 outbreaks” will not have to follow HOS laws, which regulate how many hours a driver can work without rest breaks.

According to the , these types of loads are now exempt from HOS laws:

  • Medical supplies and equipment related to the testing, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.
  • Supplies and equipment necessary for community safety, sanitation and prevention of community transmission of COVID-19 such as masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, soap and disinfectants.
  • Food and supplies for emergency restocking of stores.
  • Equipment, supplies and persons necessary to establish and manage temporary housing, quarantine and isolation facilities related to COVID-19.
  • Persons designated by federal, state or local authorities for medical, isolation or quarantine purposes.
  • Persons necessary to provide other medical or emergency services, the supply of which may be affected by the COVID-19 response.

Visit the for more info.

Truck Stops and Travel Plazas Intend to Stay Open

The National Association of Truck Stop Owners (NATSO) that its members intend to remain open and continue to serve the truckers transporting supplies and goods in support of COVID-19 emergency relief.

鈥淭ruck drivers are depending on truck stops and travel centers as they deliver food and life-saving supplies,鈥 said Lisa Mullings, NATSO president and CEO. 鈥淥ur members are committed to doing their part during the nation鈥檚 response to this emergency.鈥

For example, Pilot Flying J , “Our network of over 780 travel centers in the United States and Canada are open and ready to serve you, including laundry, restrooms and showers.” They鈥檙e also taking extra precautions like cleaning each shower after each use with degreaser, disinfectant and floor cleaner.

In the effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, it鈥檚 possible to forget how important these stops are for the safety and well-being of  truckers on the move. Earlier this week, Pennsylvania closed all rest areas and welcome centers across the state, including food service and rest rooms.

However, after an appeal from the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, . Restrooms are now open around the clock, and restaurants can provide limited takeout meals.

Drivers Can Reduce Exposure to COVID-19

Truckers don鈥檛 have the option to work from home.

According to AAA, when you鈥檙e moving from location to location, there are steps you can take to reduce the potential exposure to COVID-19 coronavirus.

  •  Start your day by washing your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • Throughout the day, if you receive any sort of equipment, spray it with disinfectant spray or wipe it down with disinfectant wipes.
  • Keep a pack of nitrile gloves. Wear them for each new job or new location throughout the day.
  • When you finish a job, disinfect your hands thoroughly.
  • Wipe down the inside of your vehicle鈥攊ncluding the door, dash, seat, handles, and any exposed surfaces.
  • Keep a small trash bag to dispose of soiled gloves, towels and wipes, and dispose of it at the end of each shift.
  • Credit cards, fuel cards, and cash can hold the virus, so it鈥檚 a good idea to wear gloves when you handle them.
  • At the end of your shift, wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.

Make sure to use products that will properly disinfect your vehicle. Consumer Reports explains how to kill coronavirus .

As last year drew to a close, Amazon announced that it will be banning third-party sellers from using FedEx for any of their two-day shipments to Prime members. According to the Wall Street Journal, the ban is meant to continue until the delivery method improves. And while the FedEx ban is said to be temporary, the growth in Amazon鈥檚 own delivery methods shows that the split could be permanent, suggesting tension in the continuing battle for freight shipping dominance. However, for the trucking industry, the shipping war is not necessarily a bad thing, and the industry is learning a lot from the business model in shipping as well as fleet payment.

Bezos has clearly disrupted the way we do business, and in turn, we have embraced the technology behind it. With such an expansive reach in product and innovation, it is no surprise that the impact has reached the trucking industry. Amazon鈥檚 impact on the trucking industry has been enormous, not only fueling the competition to meet the speed of delivery but also forcing Amazon to run like a tech company by providing tools for fleet payment that help to enable even more efficiencies.

The US Department of Transportation projects that by 2040, US annual freight volume will increase by 45% to 29 billion tons, with most of that volume hauled by truck. More than 51,000 drivers will be needed to meet that level of demand and the industry is struggling to meet the challenge. With shipping costs rising and transportation costs following suit, prices are rising for any and all products that are carried on the trailer of a truck. Unfortunately, the driver shortage continues to be the number one challenge for the industry.

, chief executive of Brenny Transportation in Minnesota, gave her truckdrivers a 15 percent raise this year, but she still can’t find enough workers for a job that now pays $80,000 a year.

To address the 鈥淎mazon effect鈥 and critical need for drivers, Joyce Brenny and other fleet owners and contractors are offering drivers as much as they can afford to get inventory delivered. These companies have realized that drivers are expecting more than sizable salaries. The benefits of time off and being home for the holidays along with tools such as fleet cards are making the job easier and life more balanced. The fleet and fuel card advantages provide benefits not only to the fleet managers but also to the drivers. The access and efficiencies that the right EFS/WEX fleet card delivers are significant:

  • Automatic accounting, reports, and powerful tools for savings
  • Rebates and cashflow flexibility to fuel your business
  • Mixed fleet and fueling solutions
  • Fuel anywhere; get savings per gallon from 7-Eleven, Conoco, and Phillips 66 pumps

The Amazon effect is forcing the transportation industry to adapt to Amazon practices, which is why fleets are continuing to bolster technology to maximize efficiencies. The Amazon effect will also continue to increase downward pressure on delivery costs, which means fleet payments could be compromised if fleet managers are not smart. Now more than ever, efficiency matters in trucking. The increased use of technology will improve efficiencies through better route planning, truck progress monitoring, and vehicle and driver performance tracking. Additionally, trucking companies will continue adapting to their customers鈥 needs by tracking individual products through the supply chain from factory to final destination. With thousands more data points to monitor, trucking companies will have to become more comfortable with onboard and cloud technology and the insights they offer.

Payment industry leader EFS/WEX has recognized these same needs for the trucking industry and has developed the technology to help. By leveraging payment data and technology, they are able to enhance fleet payment systems and streamline the process. Powerful fleet solutions provide the speed, accuracy, and transparency needed in all fleet payment transactions including vendor payment and payroll. In addition to the convenience, EFS/WEXfuel and fleet cards offer the ability to rein in one of a fleet鈥檚 biggest business expenses.

EFS/WEXfuel cards and fleet management solutions provide powerful tools to reduce spending for any business of any size:

  • Fleet fuel cards with automatic expense tracking, enhanced security, and detailed reporting. Choose the best fleet card for your business.
  • Powerful mobile apps to access your account, help drivers find the cheapest nearby fuel, pay at the pump, and more.
  • Premium GPS telematics for tracking vehicle location, speed, fuel use, and more鈥攖o capture the data you need to keep improving your bottom line.
  • Advanced analytics software聽to keep you informed, help you find new ways to save, and streamline your overall fleet operations.

Tools like these are just a few of the innovations that companies like EFS/WEXare developing to address industry requirements for efficiency and speed. So while Amazon has helped to push the industry forward, companies like EFS/WEXenable that progress by supplying the technology to not only keep up, but also to grow.

The payment market that utilizes digital identity is expected to reach $15 billion by 2024, with companies like Google, Apple, and PayPal capitalizing on the moment. What it means for them is an ability to improve the identification verification experience so that it is ever quicker and more secure. What it means for the trucking industry is an even greater focus on fleet security.

The ability to pay for goods and services without using a credit card number has become so prevalent that we don鈥檛 even think about it anymore. Usernames and passwords are stored with the payment provider, making it easier and easier to shop as seamlessly as possible. While trucking continues to innovate right along with the rest of the consumer world, its payment processes are a little more complicated. In an industry that is constantly moving, fleet security can be an enormous task, especially where payment is concerned.

Biometrics to Enhance Fleet Security and Safety

While financial institutions have been using digital identity for more than a decade, consumers have only just begun to understand the benefits and opportunities. Pew Research has suggested that the world has more than 5 billion mobile devices, half of them smart phones. Between the Internet and the population鈥檚 fascination with social media, digital identities are growing quickly. The trucking industry has come to rely on smart phones for efficiencies in communications and operations, and while mobile devices make payment easier, they also help in numerous ways to maintain fleet security.

The two largest smart phone companies in the world, Samsung and Apple, have been implementing biometric security for some time now. Truckers are using 3D facial scanning along with iris and fingerprint scanning to ensure security in fleet payment. Biometrics in trucking are also helping to save lives. Recently, a division of heavy equipment provider Caterpillar deployed biometrics in their trucks to measure and monitor driver fatigue.

Caterpillar Safety Services, a consultancy arm of Caterpillar, teamed up with Seeing Machines, the company that provides biometric technology. Caterpillar鈥檚 trucks can weigh more than 400 tons, and operate in potentially dangerous settings such as mining operations, which often work on a 24-hour clock. Drivers are often working against their natural internal clocks, and the resulting fatigue can have dangerous and potentially fatal consequences if they fall asleep behind the wheel.

Find Biometrics, Global Identity Management

While digital identity may be moving beyond payment in the consumer category, the trucking industry is still focused on financial fraud detection, which is why many fleet managers and owners are requiring drivers to rely on fuel and fleet cards while utilizing other technologies in combination with smart phones to ensure fleet security.

As fueling technology and fleet management solutions become more robust, companies like 糖心Vlogare making it harder for criminals to steal vital data. WEX is specifically vigilant in maintaining control and transparency on all fuel transactions, giving carriers control while enhancing functionality and usability. 糖心Vlogis helping fleet managers to better meet and control time-sensitive employee or contractor payment needs anytime from their mobile device.

Mobile devices and other fleet payment solutions give fleet management secure access to perform critical functions in real time. Actions such as authorization for check cashing or payments, performing overrides, and tracking transactions in real time are critical for both the drivers and the fleet managers in avoiding fraudulent transactions. With these technologies in place, there is never a question of where or how the card is being used.

Secure Fuel: Complete transparency into how your fleet is purchasing fuel鈥攚ithout interrupting your drivers鈥 operations. SecureFuel uses big data to help identify purchase irregularities and trigger real-time alerts, and ultimately helps you better manage and control your second-largest variable expense.

Data Analytics: Gain visibility into business purchases to find savings, cut costs, and prevent fraud. Find opportunities to cut costs with accurate forecast and fleet expenses. Identify purchasing anomalies and card misuse.

What a Driver Can Do for Fleet Security in Payment

While these techniques may seem obvious, they go a long way in keeping fleet payment secure and drivers safe from fraud.

  • Don鈥檛 give your fuel card account number to anyone on the phone.
  • Carry your fleet card and fuel card separately from your wallet to minimize your losses if someone steals your wallet. And carry only the card you need for that trip.
  • During a transaction, keep your eye on your fuel card. Make sure you get it back before you walk away from the fueling station.
  • Never sign a blank receipt. Draw a line through any blank spaces above the total.
  • Save your receipts to compare with your statement or give to your fleet management representative.
  • Open your bills promptly 鈥 or check them online often 鈥 and reconcile them with the purchases you鈥檝e made. Fleet management can do the same and provide support in the fleet payment area if you are not directly responsible.
  • Report any questionable charges to the fuel card issuer or fleet manager.
  • Notify your fuel card issuer or fleet management company if your address changes.
  • Don鈥檛 write your fleet card or fuel card account number on the outside of an envelope.

In an ongoing effort to mitigate fraud, fleet management companies like EFS/WEXalso provide powerful card management functionality, including access to real-time credit balances and limits, along with the ability to immediately change the card status to active/inactive/on hold in case of suspicious activity. So, while credit card fraud seems to be pervasive, there are systems and electronic payment solutions in place that can help keep companies and fleet managers feeling more confident in their own fleet security. Digital identity is becoming critical in that effort.

Digital Identity Moving Forward

While biotech may be common in smartphone technology and financial institutions, the benefits still seem dubious to many. The number of people happy to rely on conventional username and password security is still large, even if they know it is not the most secure option.

笔驰惭狈罢厂鈥&苍产蝉辫;Digital Identity Lifestyle Capsule found that 45.2 percent of consumers rely solely on passwords to keep their digital identities safe. And of that 45.2 percent, 73.4 percent said they were 鈥渧ery鈥 or 鈥渆xtremely鈥 satisfied with their current authentication options, indicating a knowledge gap surrounding security best practices.

The study went on to show that 59% of consumers use the same or similar password for most of their accounts, and only 55% of consumers would change their password if they were hacked. Fortunately, smartphone companies and others are forcing the change, and along with fingertip scanning and facial recognition, are offering alternatives that are showing up in the trucking industry as well. PYMNTS.com outlined the three top alternatives to conventional PIN and password or knowledge-based verification.

Three Alternative Systems Informing Fleet Security

1. Biometrics

Facial recognition got a boost when Apple added it (in addition to fingerprint recognition) to the new generation of iPhones. Some facial recognition offerings allow users to upload selfies, which are then compared to 3D facial maps established when users create their accounts.

The downside? Fraudsters can still game the system by using photos of users, and biometrics gets a bad rap due to privacy concerns.

To combat biometric fraud, there is a growing interest in liveliness detection, which requires users to perform defined actions during authentication that are difficult for potential hackers to replicate.

According to the Digital Identity Lifestyle Capsule, consumers reported single-digit percentages for usage of biometric authentication options such as fingerprints, facial recognition, and voice recognition. This low usage reflects the still emergent state of that technology.

2. Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is also being used to enhance liveliness detection and is being leveraged for security purposes, such as anomaly detection and the verification of physical identification methods.

Deep learning algorithms can define baselines for typical customer behavior, flagging and reviewing transactions it finds unusual to determine their likelihood of being fraudulent.

The use of AI to verify physical IDs such as drivers鈥 licenses or passports is still new and can result in false positives. AI can be taught to accept these changes, resulting in fewer false positives, but loosening standards could cause more fake IDs to be accepted.

In addition to AI, banks and fraudsters are using neural networks and other behavior-based learning systems to protect or breach financial systems. While businesses apply neural networks to authenticate customer behavior for identification, cybercriminals can use the same tools to mimic legitimate user behaviors.

3. Blockchain

The pros of using blockchain for digital ID security are that these systems store data in sequence, making it difficult for fraudsters to access information without leaving evidence 鈥 and that consumers can control their own data with blockchain, which is seen as a positive by privacy advocates.

Companies like Microsoft and Fujitsu have been working to develop blockchain-based ID systems to offer greater transparency and security. Blockchain, however, requires a high level of trust among all parties, since no central overseer is involved.

The concerns surrounding digital identity may never be completely alleviated, but the ever-evolving technology is keeping the trucking industry at the cutting edge, with fleet security in better hands than ever.

Snow might be falling in the Northern United States but the leaves are falling elsewhere, a reminder that it is time for autumn cleanup. In the trucking industry that means auditing paperwork, cleaning up files, and managing content for accuracy and compliance to ensure efficient operations and safety on the road. Maintaining fleet compliance can be a cumbersome process, but with a checklist and diligent follow-through, drivers can be confident that they need only focus on the road ahead of them. Best practices for a fleet of any size can satisfy requirements and bolster operations, especially as the demands of winter set in.

Compliance requirementsand regulations come in all forms. Fuel tax solutions, permitting, and ELD mandates may be at the top of the list. Partnering with an expert like EFS/WEX can make all those processes more efficient.  is a full-service reporting solution that assists in capturing and preparing required IFTA, IRP, and individual state fuel tax reports. permitting solutions also take the burden off the fleet manager so they can focus on moving the fleet. While partners like EFS/WEXcan help in multiple categories of compliance, the Department of Transportation is more complex. Standards are strict and follow-through is vital.

Safety and Security Through DOT Fleet Compliance

The (DOT) has long issued compliance requirements and regulations for the transportation and logistics industries; they are just a few of the regulations fleet managers need to stay ahead of. While the requirements may demand extra paperwork and resources, those allocations will be well worth the time and expense in case of an audit. Critical best practices that will help satisfy Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) mandates bear repeating. Fleet solutions that meet the standards of DOT compliance are important steps to take as companies will be held accountable.

1. Organize driver qualification files: You need to track each driver鈥檚 safety performance history with eight mandatory forms that must be kept in the driver qualification files:

  • Application for employment
  • Safety performance history forms for past employers
  • Initial motor vehicle report
  • Road test
  • Med card
  • Certificate of violation
  • Annual motor vehicle reports
  • Annual review

2. Complete daily vehicle inspection reports: Late in 2014, regulations changed such that daily vehicle inspection reports (DVIR) are no longer required when there are no safety defects detected on a vehicle. A driver is not required to prepare the DVIR if, after their post-trip inspection, he or she has identified no safety defects.

3. Take note of the short-haul exception: The short-haul exception, often referred to as the 鈥100-mile rule,鈥 has been applicable for decades but still is not utilized by many carriers that would qualify. This is an exception from the requirement to record hours of service on a graph logs sheet (or now with the electronic logging device, or ELD), and eliminates the need to prepare the electronic logs if the driver can meet certain conditions.

4. Monitor safety performance history: In October 2004, FMCSA mandated that you request a safety performance history (reference check) from all employers for which a driver drove a commercial motor vehicle during the previous three years.

5. Implement effective management control: In 2010 when the Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) program was implemented, the DOT outlined the principles they consider to be the components of 鈥渕anagement control.鈥 For centuries, business management scholars have outlined almost exactly the same principles. There are four critical processes involved in adequate management control:

  • Set performance expectations and standards in some form of a policy.
  • Thoroughly train all employees on their responsibilities and KPIs.
  • Monitor actual performance and compare with the above expectations.
  • Identify excessive variances and take 鈥渕eaningful action鈥 to bring the employees back into acceptable performance. This is normally referred to as a progressive disciplinary process involving verbal warnings, suspensions, and terminations. It is usually similar to a 鈥渢hree strikes and you鈥檙e out鈥 process.

6. Check your CSA score: CSA scoring is generated from roadside inspection violations (or warnings), accidents, or DOT audits. Monitor these scores closely and note violations as they occur. Drivers must turn in all roadside inspection reports within 24 hours. If there are violations noted, you must certify within 15 days that the repairs have been made or driver issue resolved.

truck being pulled over by law enforcement

7. Pay attention to preventive maintenance: New engine guidelines now recommend the use of synthetic oils for intervals as long as 50,000 miles. The regulations mandate that a motor carrier 鈥渟ystematically鈥 repair and maintain their vehicles. In the trucking industry, this usually means implementation of a preventive maintenance (PM) program.

8. Organize your PM files: Regarding preventive maintenance files, if you should happen to be the subject of a DOT audit, you can facilitate the process by organizing your files so you can give the auditor what they are looking for quickly.

Along with these DOT practices, it is also good idea to conduct a simulated DOT audit annually to ensure files are up to date and information is accurate. While DOT is only one of the agencies requiring fleet compliance, fleet managers would do well to get ahead of the deadlines by cleaning up paperwork and nailing down fleet solutions now before the winter weather and demanding holiday season are here.

Record amounts of snow and life-threatening cold hit the Northern Rockies last weekend, signaling that winter is not only on its way, it is here. For the trucking industry that means winter prep for every truck in the fleet, as well as the not so obvious preparation in fleet financials and cards.

From Fuel Blends to Driver Techniques

Most truck drivers understand how important preparing their vehicle is for maintaining productivity as well as safety. Fleet maintenance shops are busy inspecting trucks for cold weather conditions from tires and wipers to fuel blends. While tires are the obvious winter accessory to pay attention to, the right diesel fuel can make or break a delivery schedule.

Diesel exhaust fluid can freeze at temperatures below 10 degrees Fahrenheit even while a vehicle is idling, and low fuel tanks can trap condensation, which is prone to freezing.

Bill Dawson, Vice President of Maintenance Operations and Engineering, Ryder System

Drivers should also be prepared to handle their vehicles in any conditions, and fleet managers should have all drivers trained for heavy weather before the first snowfall. Safe driving techniques should never be taken for granted; fleet managers should monitor fleet data that tracks driver behavior throughout the season to understand where focus is needed. HDT has outlined precautions that drivers should always keep top of mind while they are inside the cab of their vehicle.

10 Tips for Winter Driving (Never Taken for Granted)

1. Wear a seatbelt (should go without saying but this is always #1)

2. Watch the dashboard lights signaling any maintenance problems

3. Be mindful of current conditions

4. Allow 20 or more feet of additional space for a safe stopping distance

5. Avoid hitting the brakes suddenly

6. Avoid idling at extremely low temperatures

7. Keep snow and ice off the roof for the safety of other motorists

8. Have a checklist to stay prepared for the worst

9. Keep an emergency supply of water, blankets, clothes, and non-perishable food in case of stranding

10. Have a maintenance plan and partner in-house or outsourced

Vehicle inspection and preparation combined with these tips is just the beginning of winter prep for the trucking industry. Fleet managers are also preparing fleet financials and financial services as well as fleet data to help provide insights into driver performance, maintenance lapses, and even fuel purchases.

Winter Safety in Data and the Right Tools

suggests you start with data from last year. Data on driver behavior and maintenance lapses can provide insights for safety in winter weather conditions, and data will also show what areas of the operations may have negatively impacted the operations of the fleet overall. Inefficiencies in fuel usage and pricing can be identified, offering better management and cost efficiencies going forward. ELD data can also show driver safety scores and vehicle usage rates, which will help to maintain compliance as well as a healthy bottom line.

ELD data can also show driver safety scores and vehicle usage rates

Fleet financial data delivered through the use of fleet cards can also be invaluable in preparing for the winter season. A reliable fleet card solution can be one of the best tools to have in any season but is especially valuable in winter, when emergencies are more likely. Fleet fuel cards can help managers and drivers both stay ahead of the unpredictable. Payment leader EFS/WEX鈥檚 fuel card solutions provide benefits that can save money and possibly even lives, such as:

  • Fleet fuel cards with automatic expense tracking, enhanced security, and detailed reporting.
  • Immediate access to cash or payments to keep your fleet running in any weather, especially winter conditions.
  • Powerful mobile apps to access your account, and help drivers find the cheapest nearby fuel, pay at the pump, and even secure emergency lodging.
  • Premium GPS telematics for tracking vehicle location, speed, fuel use, and more鈥攖o capture the data you need to ensure safety in winter conditions as well as maintain the bottom line.
  • Advanced analytics software聽to keep you informed, show you new ways to save, and streamline your overall fleet operations as well as prepare for winter driving conditions through tracking driver behavior and more.
  • A U.S.-based customer service team that takes pride in being there 24/7, always ready to take your call and help with efficiencies in business and safety on the road.

So, while snow falls on the Rockies in October, fleet managers across the country are doing more than scheduling winter maintenance checks. They are looking at every aspect of the business, from fleet data and driver behavior to fleet financials and fuel 鈥 all in an effort to prepare for what the winter might hand them, the least of which is the snow.

With technology influencing, guiding, and in some cases controlling certain industries, the standards for how we do business are changing. Digital systems are now pervasive at every step, from how we pay to how we communicate, and our mobile devices are making it all easier than ever before. In the trucking industry, fleet mobile has become a critical tool.

Now that digital has taken over so thoroughly, our digital identities have become a new priority. Concerns over identity verification and ID security have created an entire industry and helped existing providers like Apple and Google flourish further. Some fleet mobile apps even allow drivers access to goods and services via their social media identity credentials.

With the digital identity market expected to  $15 billion by 2024, major ID providers such as Google and Apple are racing to improve the identity verification experience. Their presence is felt in every corner of digital life: Utilizing these providers to log in to third-party websites has become ubiquitous, along with the ability to pay for goods and services via the developers鈥 proprietary payment methods.

In trucking and transportation, the reliance on a digital ID is paramount to success. New standards for driver鈥檚 licenses and passports are emerging, fostering compatibility with digital integration. There is a lot of talk about what鈥檚 ahead, but let鈥檚 take a look at the efforts that have already been put into place to help both the private and commercial sectors transition. These trends are particularly relevant to progress in fleet digital, as travel and transportation rely on identity in more than one way.

Digital securities company has presented some findings to help the trucking industry better understand the path ahead by first reviewing some of the steps taken up to now.

Technologies and Regulations Supporting the Digital Transformation Ahead

  • projects (also known as mobile driver’s licenses) gathered momentum in countries including the USA, UK, Australia, and the Netherlands.
  • Early tests of blockchain technologies were conducted in Estonia, to aid development of a groundbreaking transnational e-resi鈥媎ency program, and in the UK, to see how blockchain can help make efficient welfare payments to citizens.
  • Smart borders/smart airportsemerged at a faster pace. Combined with the 1 billion e-passports now in circulation, and a strong push behind biometrics (particularly ), they offered travelers a taste of cross-border movement as secure as it is swift and seamless.
  • The European Union’s Electronic Identification and Signature (eIDAS) regulation came into force in July 2016, requiring mandatory cross-border recognition of electronic IDs by September 2018.
driver uses card with digital id showing up

Digital travel advancements are also becoming critical for the trucking industry. It can be said that secure fleet ID and fleet digital licensing are the most important aspect of over-the-road trucking. The US government understands, recently awarding a federal grant to the US Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to study the category. The grant will be used to further support development of trusted identities, based on the digital driver’s license. Multiple steps have taken us to where we are today, and the momentum will continue.

5 Forces That Continue to Shape Fleet Digital and the Road Ahead

According to experts at , a digital identity consulting company, the next two years will see some of the most accelerated evolution so far in the field of secure digital identity. The demands and features expected in private and fleet ID alike may seem obvious but are worth repeating:

  1. More mobility
  2. Greater demand for security and trust
  3. An accelerating shift toward smart cities
  4. More calls for public supervision of digital identification systems
  5. Even more 鈥, national ID 鈥嬧媔nitiatives. and implementations

The further details the categories:

Mobile Communication Dominates

ID will become ever more mobile. Of course, it doesn’t take an expert to recognize we’ve entered an era in which mobile connectivity dominates, especially in the trucking and transportation industry. But it’s worth emphasizing that the trend shows no sign of abating, and the implications for digital personal and fleet ID are profound.

  • 鈥嬧 Mobile devices (also including tablets) are now the major means of accessing the internet for users and accounted for 73% of time spent using the internet in 2018. It was 65% in 2016 and 70% in 2017.
  • In 2019 the percentage is expected to be 76%, according to Zenith’s new Mobile .
  • Google 鈥 a company that knows a thing or two about the future of technology 鈥 is steadily moving toward a mobile-only world.
  • The lesson for all digital ID stakeholders and particularly a mobile industry like trucking: Prepare for
Guaranteed Security: Private Data, Public Framework

Identity is the link that connects an individual to his or her community. For public authorities, the key challenge in the next two years will be to create harmonious digital bonds that secure the relationship between new mobile identities and the wider society. This is possible only through a public framework of trust, built on guarantees of private data protection and security. For fleet mobile, security for individual drivers and fleet Identity is critical for business.

In terms of privacy protection, the General Data Protection Regulation of May 2018 (GDPR) for European Member States represents a major step forward for data protection and privacy. Twenty-eight countries are impacted, including the UK. Yes, you read that right: Five hundred million people have the same law. In August 2017, India’s supreme court ruled privacy a “fundamental right鈥 in a landmark case illustrating that biometric data protection is now on top of the regulators’ agenda in the largest democracy in the world.

Privacy protection laws are being enhanced by Modi’s new government in 2019. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), voted in at the end of May 2018, will come into force as of January 1, 2020. It is a major step forward for privacy rights as the state is often seen as a trendsetter in this domain 鈥 the law is potentially a model for a federal data privacy law. In that sense, the CCPA has the potential to become as important as the GDPR.

Privacy鈥 demands rigorous accountability. We鈥檙e seeing in 2017-2019 the emergence of a global consensus, its fundamental principle being that mismanagement of personal information will not be tolerated and that companies that do not protect data properly could be hit with large fines.鈥 The trucking industry is also taking steps to secure individual and fleet identity.

Trusted Payment Partners Are Answering the Call

Trusted partners like EFS/WEX are also doubling down on security within the fleet identity realm. As a payment leader in the industry, EFS/WEXabsolutely must protect customers against identity breach and fraud. By developing digital solutions that streamline back office efficiencies, mitigating error and addressing the potential of digital violations and fraud, 糖心Vloghas become one of the most trusted payment companies in an industry that is already highly susceptible. The EFS/WEXtools and systems provide tightened controls and insights into payment and purchasing that can be used to thwart a fleet mobile breach or fleet identity theft. Real-time purchasing data collected by the company can provide greater visibility and, therefore, more control over the identity of the person who is spending and where.

The Smart City Will Become Our Playground

Around the world, the shift of populations to urban environments is already one of the defining trends of the 21st century. Inevitably, technological developments are becoming inextricably linked with this mass migration. The digital or  is becoming the model that ensures consistency in all the links between urbanites, their wider communities, and public authorities. Digital identity is the key that unlocks the individual’s access to a rich array of services and support. Or, to put it another way, the smart city is set to become our new playground. By their very nature, smart cities are mobile environments. Digital ID will therefore represent the 鈥渧irtual umbilical cord鈥 that continuously links each individual to their public and social life. Digital Identity in the trucking industry will act in the same way.

Connectivity through fleet mobile will also continue to advance, creating opportunities within national and local communities. Security in fleet digital identity will always be urgent as mobility expands both in the cab and on the road.

Public Supervision Will Be Critical to Sustain Growth in the Digital Economy

Faced with an increasingly challenging economic landscape, governments are inevitably searching for new opportunities for harmonious sustainable growth. As regulatory environments take shape, close collaboration between the financial world, central and local public authorities, and digital communications operators will support effective solutions and implementation of best practices. Of course, the real source of new business opportunities is not digital identity itself, but the myriad applications it enables. This is where banks and other operators including fleet payment will see a bottom-line return on their investment. The march of digital ID is well underway. The focus will therefore be on the adoption of the new structures and regulations that are needed to govern the associated services and transactions.

politician shakes hands while digital information swirls around

The Role of Public Authorities in 2018-2020:

  • Build and nurture national momentum.
  • Support and coordinate local government investments through which local transformations, close to the community, can operate effectively and efficiently.
  • Make sure that these multiple local initiatives create a coherent and interoperable spectrum of solutions: Wherever they may be, mobile citizens will need to find similar modes of service.

In the years ahead, the market will follow these initiatives. How can we be so sure?

Because evidence of  and associated services is multiplying, giving us the clearest signals since the concept was first introduced some 15 years ago that a tipping point has been reached.

A Revolution Is Upon Us

The digital ID evolution will continue to move forward, and while the private sector will continue to push requirements for security, the trucking industry will benefit from the solutions offered even more than most because of the nature of their mobile business. Digital driver鈥檚 licenses, digital social credentials, fleet mobile, and cloud identities put drivers and fleets at risk every day, but with a clear understanding of vulnerabilities and a robust strategy in place to address the potential, the trucking industry could also play a big part in the nation鈥檚 digital identity revolution.

Fleet Insights and Analytics Driving the Future of Fleets

Almost every business today is reliant on data to inform more choices and smarter decisions. Mobile phones, robust software systems, and credit cards are driving buying decisions, enabling control, and predicting behavior. While financial institutions and the stock market have been using these kinds of tools for years, the rest of the world is joining them and that includes the trucking industry. Fleet Managers are adapting to technology and becoming safer, more efficient, and more in control than ever before. Fleet insights are paving the way for better business capabilities that are not only helping in their own success but the success of the industry overall.

Top 7 Benefits of Fleet Data Analytics

  1. Data to track driving behavior and monitor safety
  2. Data to recruit employees with longevity and relevance
  3. Data from credit cards to show buying patterns and behavior
  4. Data to accurately forecast and budget fleet expenses
  5. Data for efficiencies on the road through GPS scheduling
  6. Data to streamline logistics and supply chain strategies
  7. Data to monitor and maintain truck maintenance

So, it is clear that big data is big business and fleets are taking advantage without being overwhelmed. They are able to differentiate the information they are gathering and prioritize how they apply that information. Fleet data is generated in two distinctive ways 鈥 on and off the truck. Fleet data generated on the truck can include vehicle performance, driver behavior, and environment insights through GPS and telematics. Fleet insights and data collected off the truck are usually generated from office operations systems and include everything from transportation management, insurance, and compliance records to vehicle maintenance and payment systems. Fleet data is then analyzed to provide the right direction and action that strengthen processes and business operations overall.

When It Comes to Payment, Fleet Analytics Is a MUST

When we think of fleet data, most would consider location data and telematics, and for good reason. Telematics has come a very long way in evolving the trucking industry. However, while telematics is taking advantage of tracking and scheduling, another side of software and data is generating OTR fleet analytics that continue to push the industry forward by evaluating behavior and trends. Payment leader WEX has combined OTR fuel cards with OTR analytics in creating an invaluable resource to help with controlling and anticipating the fleet spend along with so much more.

Fleet analytics and insights in action

Fleet analytics and insights in action have made a seemingly complex idea like the study of data seem relevant and accessible. Now fleets can take advantage of all forms of data whether it is collected from the sensors on a truck, the telematics in a GPS system, or the spending feedback from a fuel card. Big data is about collecting all of the data you can get your hands on, from traditional numbers to things like text messages and video streams. Companies like 糖心Vlogare leading by example and making data analytics part of their company culture.

This kind of information-based environment and strategy nurtures innovation and attracts partners and employees with a shared passion for the power of data. 鈥 Kurt Thearling, WEX, VP of Analytics

Fleet data, insights, and analytics have become just as valuable as the fleet itself. To that end, fleets are embracing the capabilities and looking forward to the future they bring.

The CFO鈥檚 role within their business is undergoing fundamental change.

It is no longer enough for CFOs to serve as a financial scorekeeper. Boards, CEOs and other corporate leaders expect their CFO to help develop strategies for keeping up with change, ensuring control and compliance, managing exploding data volumes, and driving revenue growth and profits.

To meet the new demands placed on them by their businesses, CFOs must automate finance and harness the power of their data. Sixty-two percent of CFOs and other finance executives surveyed for Accenture鈥檚 study already have seen increased demand for insights and analytics from financial data. As a result, CFOs are prioritizing the automation of transaction processing, accounting, compliance and control (e.g. reconciliation, audit, tax filing), and reporting.

Thirty-four percent of traditional finance tasks are already performed by technology, Accenture reports. But that doesn鈥檛 mean that there aren鈥檛 plenty of opportunities for CFOs to digitize routine accounting, control and compliance tasks to create additional business value and drive efficiencies.

Optimizing payments to suppliers should be high on the CFO鈥檚 to-do list.

Optimizing supplier payments helps CFOs achieve strategic objectives

There are four ways CFOs can optimize the financial supply chain, and take a more disciplined approach to achieving their strategic objectives:

1. Improved cash management

Extending Days Payable Outstanding (DPO) 鈥 a calculation of the average amount of time it takes a business to pay its suppliers 鈥 when taking a strategic and disciplined approach to paying suppliers electronically an organization should consider varying the settlement timing based upon payment type. You can easily capture discounts and incentives for accelerating payments, while extending DPO for manual check payments. It鈥檚 a great way to drive supplier adoption and gain additional float. Improving cash management supports your strategic objectives such as paying down debt, making capital investments, increasing research and development and supporting growth initiatives.

2. Higher profit margins

Increasing profitability is a big challenge for businesses in today鈥檚 increasingly competitive global economy. CFOs can help their business accomplish this objective by paying suppliers via a virtual card 鈥 16-digit, one-time-use, 鈥減lastic-less鈥 card programs that are tied to a transaction.

Businesses earn money back on their accounts payable spend. This can defray an accounts payable department鈥檚 overhead, free up the capital to purchase a solution for automating invoice processing or contribute to higher profit margins.

3. Lower Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

The purchase of raw materials is a big contributor to a business鈥 COGS. CFOs can help their business reduce its COGS and improve its competitive position in the process by capturing the discounts that suppliers offer on the invoice-due amount in exchange for early payment.

A stout 80 percent of suppliers offer early payment discounts, the Institute of Finance and Management鈥檚 (IOFM) found. The average discount offered is 2 percent, although many buyers in many industries routinely capture early payment discounts of 6 percent or more, IOFM adds.

Automating supplier payments empowers businesses to capture more early payment discounts to lower their COGS. Automated solutions include workflow engines that digitally route invoices for approval and exceptions handling, based on a buyer鈥檚 pre-configured business rules.

With automation, there is no chance that invoices will become lost. Alerts, notifications and escalation procedures keep invoices from becoming 鈥渟tuck鈥 on someone鈥檚 desk. Accounts payable staff can instantly view invoices whose window for early payment discounts is closing. And electronic payments eliminate the time-consuming task of printing checks, stuffing them into envelopes, affixing postage, and sorting payments by zip code.

4. Mitigate risks

Fraud and compliance violations can lead to irreparable reputational and brand damage, fines and penalties, sanctions, significant write-offs, lost business and more. Paying suppliers electronically provides businesses with the visibility, tracking and control they need to mitigate costly fraud and compliance risks. Automation tracks invoice history and approvals, ensures compliance with invoice approval policies, enforces separation of duties, assures chain of custody, makes audit information readily available, applies PCI compliance controls and prevents sensitive documents from being destroyed prematurely.

Each of these benefits is compelling.

Together they help CFOs digitize finance and harness the power of their finance data 鈥 positioning themselves as a business partner to boards, CEOs and other corporate leaders.

It is no wonder that 69 percent of CFOs and other executives plan to increase investments this year in digital technologies such as electronic payments to keep their competitive market position, per the 2018 CFO Insights on New Technologies study conducted by Grant Thornton and CFO Research.

Are you looking for help in optimizing your financial supply chain and improving payments to suppliers?

Fuel Cards Save Time, Money, and More

As fuel cards become more and more popular in the trucking industry, card options are proliferating. Fleets are finding just as many options for fuel cards as consumers have for credit. As with credit cards, fleet managers are at a turning point in answering the question 鈥淲hat鈥檚 in your wallet?鈥

Traditionally the benefits of a fleet card have focused on control and transparency for the fleet manager, but as the consumer world has shifted to digital payment, so too has the trucking arena, where drivers are embracing the change as well. While payment leaders and WEX have followed through on their promise to provide fleet managers and owners game-changing solutions such as reporting and real-time updates on spending and business-related expenses, they are also providing advantages to drivers by eliminating manual expense reporting and receipt submission. What some companies might not consider right away is how much time and money drivers and managers can save by using a fuel card and its single point of exchange as well as the data that each use provides.

With the 糖心Vlogaccount we are able to track all charges, when they were made, where they were made, who made the purchases, and how much was spent. It has saved us thousands of dollars. Brandi De Marinis, Clermont, Florida

mobile fleet payments

Along with the advantages above, fleets and drivers are embracing fleet mobile payments and expecting the same consistent and reliable experience they have when using the tangible fuel card in their wallet. With any new innovation involving money, security and fraud prevention are critical. Fleet card companies are focusing on that concern along with a number of trends that customers are driving. Global digital services leader recently published a on trends in the fuel card arena. The findings provide a better understanding of how fuel cards are being used currently and what is to come.

Current Industry Trends in Fuel Cards and Payment

  • Omni-channel experience.
The cards industry is moving toward increased personalization based on analytics to make the customer experience more seamless. It leverages online channels to reduce customer acquisition time and cost.
Fuel card players have started to leverage mobile apps for customer servicing and to help cardholders locate the nearest
    service station.
  • Migration to EMV.
With the US cards industry embracing Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV), most major markets globally have
moved to EMV. Migration to EMV has involved investments from card-issuing players, merchants, and merchant acquirers. In recent years, the
fuel card industry has started embracing EMV card issuance. There are two key benefits that chip-based cards provide 鈥 improved security and finer control of 鈥渙ffline鈥 credit card transaction approvals.
  • Loyalty offerings.
Loyalty programs have always remained one of the key drivers of the cards industry as  the changing market space, customer demands, and competition make customer retention increasingly difficult.
Fuel card issuers like BP have rich loyalty program features for fuel cards through a tie-in with Nectar (a loyalty point aggregator).
  • Telematics interface.
Fuel card service providers have started to embed the telematics interface and robust reporting facilities (derived out
of telematics data and enhanced data capture) as standard product offerings to improve fleet management efficiency.
  • Emerging cardholder verification methods. Consumer device cardholder verification method (CDCVM) is an additional security feature that can be used to evaluate whether the person presenting the payment instrument is the legitimate owner of the instrument. This will play an important role in the fuel card industry to prevent fraud by drivers.
  • Host card emulation. Host card emulation has opened numerous opportunities for issuers to offer innovative in-house payment solutions. Issuers now have an opportunity to integrate contactless payments withtheir native app using HCE, thereby providing an additional form factor for consumers. Incorporating fuel cards into NFC-based mobile payment initiatives will make the cards even easier for fleet players to use.
Leveraging social
  • Leveraging social.
Card issuers are increasingly leveraging social media for marketing, customer acquisition, customer service, and keeping tabs on customer sentiments. API-driven interfaces with
fuel card platforms will enable leveraging of social media for customer service, acquisition, and campaigns.
  • Focus on security.
Tokenization and biometric authentication for enhanced security continue to have a strong influence on the payments industry. With the increase in mobile payments and recent data breaches at leading retailers, card issuers are adopting tokenization like never before. Tokenization coupled with end-to-end encryption enhances payments data security. F
uel cards are expected to continue adopting tokenization considering that mobile-based payments are expected to gather momentum across product categories in the cards industry.

What these trends indicate is that innovation is taking hold in the fuel card arena that will have an impact not only on fleet managers, owners, and operators but also on the fuel industry and the payment sector 鈥 proof that once again, the trucking industry is driving business in more ways than one.
